Celexa drug is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, (SSRI's). Celexa affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. Celexais used to treat anxiety, depression, panic disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders. Citalopram or Celexa drug inhibits the reuptake of neuro chemicals such as serotonin in the nervous system. With more of these circulating neuro chemicals, the nervous system is able to function better. Several weeks of therapy are need to see results with the drug Celexa. The usual doses are started low and increased until an effective level is reached.
Celexa can be taken with many other medications. You need to make sure you tell your doctor if you are taking, or planning to take, any medicine - even the types you buy over the counter. As with other SSRIs, caution is indicated in the coadministration of TCAs (Tricyclic antidepressants), with Celexa. If you're not sure about any medication you are taking, ask your doctor or pharmacist.
You should not take the drug Celexa if you are currently taking certain other antidepressant medications in the group called monoamine oxidase (MAO) inhibitors, such as phenelzine or tranylcypromine. You should stop taking MAO inhibitors 2 weeks before starting Celexa, and you should be off Celexa for 2 weeks before starting on MAO inhibitor medication.
Celexa dosages usually begin at 20 mg/day. Maximum Celexa dosage should not exceed 60 mg/day. If you are planning to stop taking Celexa, ask your doctor about reducing your dose gradually. It is not usually recommended for patients to stop Celexa all at once. People with kidney or liver trouble, the elderly, or those with weak constitutions should take no more than 40 mg/day.
Celexa drug overdose may cause coma, irritability, dizziness, drowsiness, racing heartbeat, facial flushing, nausea, sweating, tremor, or vomiting, and should be treated by a healthcare professional immediately.
Celexa is normally taken once a day, and can be taken with or without food, except grapefruit juice. You should avoid grapefruit juice while you are on Celexa, as it may lead to increased blood levels of the drug. If you miss a dose, do not take a double dose the following day.
Celexa has a favorable side-effect profile. As with any medication, you may experience some side effects, but with Celexa, most side effects are mild and tend to go away as you continue taking Celexa. The most frequent side effects reported with Celexa are nausea, dry mouth, drowsiness, insomnia, increased sweating, tremor, diarrhea, and problems with ejaculation.
People taking Celexa generally do not suffer from insomnia, agitation, nervousness, or anxiety any more than people not taking Celexa. Furthermore, Celexa has not been associated with clinically significant weight changes.
Withdrawal symptoms are sometimes seen when the drug is stopped - dizziness, nausea, headache, fatigue, poor concentration, mood changes. The withdrawal syndrome is thought to be due to a shortage of serotonin in the body when Citalopram or Celexa is stopped. Tapering off the dosage slowly will eliminate this problem.
