Effexor (venlafaxine) is a fairly new antidepressant, and is used to treat depression and generalized anxiety disorder. There is also current evidence that the drug may be useful in treating ADD/ADHD in children and adults.
It affects chemicals in your brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. Effexor is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; sleeping too much; insomnia; and thoughts of death or suicide.
Effexor increases neurotransmitter activity and inhibits the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine, and dopamine. Effexor usually takes two to four weeks to relieve the symptoms of depression. However some patients report an improvement in symptoms within the first week.
Some common side effects include headache, nausea, weight loss, constipation, dizziness, dry mouth, insomnia, blurry vision, diarrhea, sexual dysfunction, raised blood pressure, decreased appetite and others.
Effexor should not be taken with or within fourteen days of taking MAO inhibitors. Avoid using alcohol while taking this drug. Use of cimetidine (tagamet) and fluoxetine (prozac) while taking Effexor can significantly raise the blood concentration of Effexor.
