Xanax is a prescription medicine that slows down the central nervous system. It is widely used to treat nervousness and tension, panic disorders, muscle spasm, convulsive disorders and insomnia. It works by affecting the part of the brain that controls the emotions, thereby slowing down the nervous system. Xanax is drug known as a benzodiazepine. It works on the nerve cells in the brain to enhance the effects of a chemical called gamma aminobutyric acid (GABA). Xanax takes about 2 hours to be effective, although it may take 6 weeks for the full benefit to set in. It is usually prescribed in tablet form. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking Xanax for longer than prescribed may be habit-forming. Xanax may cause drowsiness or dizziness. Do not drive, operate machinery, or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how you react to this medicine.
